What is a Women's Circle?

...and how it can help your mental health

Women’s circles have been trending over the past few years and it has created a lot of curiosity and interest. The name gives a strong hint at what it’s all about, but to elaborate, it is a group of women gathering together to share and support each other. Its origins are ancient and go back to when our ancient sisterhood used to sit together to share wisdom, complete rituals and ceremonies, and can but not always be related to mensuration cycles.

I believe it has resurfaced now as women are becoming drawn to embracing their power and feminity again as well as a longing for true connection with others (for more information, keep reading here).

Deep down we all crave connection, safety and acceptance from our sisterhood

I have a personal interest in spirituality however I am also a counsellor who highly values evidence-based practices to create meaningful change for my clients. That’s why my women’s circles are a blend of this ancient gathering of wise women with activities and reflections designed to support your mental health. For example, the Anxious Mum’s women’s circle brings beautiful souls together to support each other while also having topics or themes that focus on healing anxiety and fears.

So in addition to honouring our feminine ancestors, women’s circles can also help with your mental health by:

  • Connection with others reduces loneliness.
  • The creative and reflective exercises help change how we interact with the world and challenge negative beliefs.
  • Exercises such as meditations and grounding can also increase emotional regulation skills.
  • The shared experiences & vulnerability that these circles encourages healing through removing shame
  • The presence of an experienced facilitator reduces the chances of negative interactions or judgements within the group as well as ensuring the emotional safety of all.

It makes sense though, considering that humans are fundamentally social creatures, that when we reach out and connect with each other, we also heal. If this sounds like something you may be interested, contact me to find out when our next circle is starting or get more information here about what types of circles I run from my Somerville location.
