What is the National Redress Scheme and How Can It Help?

National Redress Scheme Counselling logo

The National Redress Scheme (NRS) was created to support people who experienced child sexual abuse in Australian institutions. For many survivors, the impact of trauma continues long after the abuse occurred. It can affect self-esteem, relationships, trust, mental health, and overall wellbeing. The NRS acknowledges this harm and offers pathways to healing and support.

Through the scheme, eligible survivors may have access to:

  • A monetary payment (redress)
  • A personal response from the institution involved
  • Funded access to counselling and psychological support

The counselling portion of the scheme is an essential part of recovery. Survivors of institutional abuse often carry heavy emotional wounds—feelings of shame, grief, anger, or disconnection. Having access to trauma-informed counselling means working with a professional who understands how deeply abuse can affect every aspect of life and who can provide a safe and compassionate space to begin healing.

Hands touching to represent counselling at deeper perspectives as a safe place to process trauma

If you are interested in working with me, I am registered with the National Redress Scheme to provide counselling under this funding. My work is trauma-informed, which means I prioritise safety, choice, and empowerment in every session. We go at your pace. Some people begin by simply having a safe space to talk and be heard, while others choose to work more actively on processing the trauma and its ongoing impacts.

Therapy may include:

  • Understanding and calming trauma responses in the body
  • Learning gentle coping strategies to manage distressing feelings
  • Exploring identity and relationships after trauma
  • Rebuilding a sense of trust and self-worth

The goal is not to “erase” the past, but to help you reclaim control over your present and future. Survivors are not defined by what happened to them, and with the right support, healing and strength are possible.

If you are eligible for the National Redress Scheme and are looking for a safe, confidential, and supportive counselling environment, I can walk alongside you in your journey.
