Confidentiality Policy

Please see below our Confidentiality Policy. Before commencing any counselling or psychotherapy sessions with us, we will supply you a copy of the below document for you to review and sign.

1. Overview

At Deeper Perspectives Counselling and Psychotherapy, we are committed to maintaining the highest standards of confidentiality and privacy for our clients. This Confidentiality Policy outlines our practices and procedures for handling client information and upholds the legal and ethical standards set forth by Australian laws, including the Privacy Act 1988 and the Psychotherapy and Counselling Federation of Australia (PACFA) Code of Ethics.

2. Confidentiality

2.1. Client Information: All information shared during counselling sessions, whether in person or electronically, is treated with the utmost confidentiality. This includes verbal, written, and electronic communications.

2.2. Exceptions: While confidentiality is a fundamental principle, there are legal and ethical exceptions that may require us to breach confidentiality. These exceptions include, but are not limited to, situations where there is a risk of harm to the client or others, mandatory reporting obligations, or as required by law.

3. Client Consent

3.1. Informed Consent: Before commencing counselling services, clients will be provided with information regarding the limits of confidentiality. They will be asked to provide written informed consent, indicating their understanding of these limits.

3.2. Release of Information: Any release of client information to third parties will only occur with the client’s explicit written consent, unless legally mandated.

4. Duty to Warn and Protect

In cases where a client poses a risk of harm to themselves or others, we have a duty to take appropriate steps to protect the safety and well-being of all parties involved. This may involve breaching confidentiality to seek assistance or support from relevant authorities or individuals.

5. Data Security

5.1. Electronic Records: Any electronic records containing client information are stored securely with password protection and encryption.

5.2. Paper Records: Any physical records containing client information are stored in a locked and secure location. These will be destroyed 7 years after the last session.

6. Supervision and Consultation

To ensure the highest quality of care and ethical standards, our counsellors may engage in regular supervision and consultation with qualified professionals. These consultations will not include personally identifiable client information.

7. Client Access to Records

Clients have the right to access their own records upon request. Any access requests should be made in writing, and we will respond within the timeframes required by law.

8. Client Anonymity

We will make every effort to protect the anonymity of clients in any reports, publications, or presentations involving case material.

9. Review of Policy

This Confidentiality Policy will be reviewed regularly to ensure it remains in compliance with Australian laws and ethical standards. Any updates or changes to this policy will be communicated to clients.
